Today is Trans Day Of Visibility, and as such, I felt I would make a little list of some of my favourite trans and gender non conforming musicians big and small, to celebrate the musicians who have put themselves out there as the truest form of themselves, and have helped me, and countless other trans people be more open about who we are and to live the happiest and freest lives we can. <3 a playlist with all songs featured will be included at the end.
Sam Smith
Sam Smith is a singer/songwriter from London. They’ve garnered massive critical and commercial success, both prior to, and since, their coming out as genderqueer in 2017. Click here to listen.
Ashby And The Oceanns
Ashby And The Oceanns is the musical project of Ashylnn Barker, a transgender artist from Chicago. She also creates the amazing Fake Gamer Girl webcomic series. Click here to listen.
She/Her/Hers
The brainchild of San Diego based multi-instrumentalist and singer Emma Grrl, She/Her/Hers is a raucous Ska influenced, Folk punk band, that is infused with a great sense of humour, and a really grounded approach to lyrics around being trans, as well as lots of other topics. Click here to listen.
Laura Jane Grace
If you know me, you knew this entry was coming. Laura is the singer and guitarist for the anarchist folk punk band Against Me!, as well as having a stellar solo career on top of that. If leftist politics, acoustic guitars and screaming till your lungs fall out sounds like a fun time, you’ll love Laura Jane Grace. Click here to listen.
Andrew Huang
YouTuber, Singer, Songwriter, Electronic Artist, the list goes on. Andrew Huang is one of the best music YouTubers out there in my opinion, making in depth but approachable videos about whatever excites them. They also have an amazing catalogue of music, ranging from lofi hiphop, to electronica, to straight up pop romps. Click here to listen.
Ruubez
Ruby Price, a friend and bandmate of mine is the mastermind behind the great, heavy, catchy, electronic infused punk/grunge of Ruubez, who recently released a brand new single named Cynical, which everybody should hear, it’s an amazing blend of punk, metal, industrial and grunge, and is overall really fucking cool. Click here to listen.
Skatune Network/We Are The Union
I’m combining these entries as the person behind them is the same, Jeremy Andrew Hunter, who is a multi-instrumentialist, and with their project Skatune Network, creates brilliantly entertaining ska covers of all kinds of songs, and they also play trombone in the more serious band We Are The Union (that being said, at the time of writing this, WATU just released a ska cover of Rasputin, so maybe not that much more serious). Click here to listen to Skatune Network, and click here to listen to We Are The Union.
Anohni
Previously the lead singer of the band Antony And The Johnsons, Anohni now has a beautiful, if eccentric solo career. The best description is probably “Art Pop”, or Indie, but they both feel a bit lacklustre. She creates beautifully haunting music, usually rather relaxed, floaty and poetic, but slightly on edge at the same time. Click here to listen.
Left At London
TikTokker, Musician, Vine Star, it doesn’t get much more viral than that. Left At London’s fame started as “the kid in that ‘haha i do that’ vine”, but since, she’s amassed a fantastic collection of music, as well as an extremely sizeable following on TikTok. Click here to listen.
