ABOUT THE SOCIETY

The University of Huddersfield LGBTQ+ Society is a group for LGBTQ+ students to meet, socialise, and get involved in LGBTQ+ related events and/or activism in an inclusive, safe, and welcoming space. We're inclusive of everyone who is not cisgender, not heterosexual (including people on the asexual and aromantic spectrum), is intersex, and/or is questioning their gender or sexuality.

Whether you're out to everyone in your life or no-one, we'd love to get to know you!

WHAT WE DO

We run events, provide someone to talk to (or else direct you towards someone else who can help), share resources, maintain online spaces, run campaigns, fundraise to support LGBTQ+ causes and the local community, and advocate for improvements to LGBTQ+ students rights and experiences.

OUR EVENTS

We hold weekly "wet" socials where we meet up at a local bar, this will be every Friday, time and venue to be determined so keep your eyes peeled!

We also hold fortnightly "dry" socials where we meet at Arcade Coffee in Huddersfield every other Saturday from 1pm, you can meet us there or a committee member will be at a designated meeting spot at the university in enough time for everyone to make it

Trans + Nonbinary specific socials will be held once a month on the second Thursday every month at 6pm. Brand new for 2021/22 will be our aspec meetings for asexual and aromantic members of the society and members who are questioning whether they are aspec to meet and socialise with other aspec members. These will be held on the second Tuesday of every month at 6pm, for more details on both of these please contact Kezia Johnston on u1958791@unimail.hud.ac.uk

If you have any suggestions of things you'd like to see from us, please get in contact!

FAQs

Q: Do you have alcohol-free events?

A: Yes, we do! Our fortnightly coffee afternoons and our early evening activities (typically 6-8PM) are all alcohol-free unless otherwise specified.

Q: I'm not sure if I'm LGBTQ+ or not, can I join anyway?

A: Yes! We'd be happy to support you in figuring out your identity and giving you a chance to be part of a community of LGBTQ+ people.

Q: I'm definitely not LGBTQ+ but I am an ally. Can I join?

A: Some of our events are open to everyone, and we'd love to see you at some of these! However, other events aren't unless you're accompanying someone who is an LGBTQ+ student. If you're not sure, feel free to reach out and ask!

Q: Can I bring a friend or partner to an event, even if they don't go to this University/aren't LGBTQ+/don't live in Huddersfield?

A: You can, although we have to officially say that we aren't responsible for your guest.

Q: I have accessibility requirements, will I be able to attend events?

A: We will do our best to support you and make our events as accessible as possible. Please get in touch with the Society President or Equalities Accessibility Officer to discuss what support you would need.

Q: I have a problem and I need someone to talk to. Can you help?

A: We try to offer support where we can, and where we can't, to direct you to the right services or people. Get in touch with a committee member for more information.
